A German-South African study from 2018 found that barefoot running should begin in childhood. This is because barefoot running has a major impact on foot development, gait and physical performance, the experts concluded from the results. If, on the other hand, we humans run in firm, stiff shoes, we can often injure our feet, knees, hips and back. Anyone who has suffered these injuries knows about the pain, the limitation of mobility and the unfavorable prognosis for healing.

It is repeatedly shown that the information about the causes of these plaguing diseases of civilization is either not recognized or not recognized correctly. The explanation is quite simple: the most common cause is walking and running in shoes with more or less stiff soles . This ensures that we civilized people practice a walking style that has little to do with natural movement. The inflexibility of the shoe sole acts like a plaster cast, which puts almost all of the foot muscles "out of action".
As a result, the muscles can no longer hold the foot in its original, three-dimensional shape, which is why the foot literally "collapses". The consequences are well known and are among the most common diseases of civilization: flat feet, fallen arches, knock-knees or splay feet, hallux valgus (deformation of the big toe joint) and even heel spurs and Achilles tendon problems. Our "foundation", our feet, have become largely ineffective due to wearing shoes and the resulting immobilization of the foot muscles. If you want to move healthily and pain-free, you should find a way back to natural movement, reactivate the foot muscles and go barefoot as often as possible.

Natural barefoot walking consists of a constant sequence of tension and relaxation with every step! Barefoot walking occurs,
- by placing the entire, flat sole of the foot on the ground (as quietly as possible),
- the push-off is done with the toes (and not with the forefoot),
- the knee is fully extended (the entire musculature relaxes briefly),
- the foot swings through (and thus also relaxes the Achilles tendon) and
- is placed again with the other, flat foot.
You can see this running style very well in sprinters who do not allow themselves the luxury of accelerating their bodies even a millimeter upwards when running. This saves you the considerable effort you previously used for the "jumping technique". The closer contact with the ground also makes you much faster and more enduring, and you run pain- and injury-free, provided there are no restrictive, pathological findings.
If you want to jog barefoot, you should start with short distances and a very moderate pace. First, muscles, ligaments and tendons have to get used to the new tasks again before they can develop their full potential. You will also experience muscle soreness in the first few days and weeks, but this is always a good sign.
